The
Four-Point Advantage
Tetrax’s
unique advantage over traditional posturography systems, both static
and dynamic, is due to its utilization of four individual balance
pressure pads mounted within the platform. These pressure pads measure
the weight fluctuations between the two heels and two toe points,
which serve as four points of support. As the result of the measurement
of four independent outputs, new postural parameters, including
synchronizations, diagonal weight shifts, and weight distribution
harmony, can be computed. These new parameters are used to calculate
the fall index oe a unique feature of the Tetrax system. In addition,
the use of four pressure pads provides added sensitivity to subtle
changes in postural responses not detected by other posturographic
systems, and not visible by routine clinical observation.
Pinpointing
the Source of Instability
An accurate assessment of balance, carried out at a health-care
professional’s office, can forestall health problems by revealing
the sources of disability. The Tetrax system can pinpoint the source
of instability by virtue of various balance parameters provided
only by Tetrax and by comparison of results from the different sections
of the balance platform. This is the first step in guiding the treatment
and rehabilitation options for patients.

TETRAX Fall
Risk Information
Nearly one third of
older Canadians fall every year, according to Health Canada. Falls account
for 84 per cent of injury-related admissions to hospital, 40 per cent
of admissions to nursing homes and a 10 per cent increase in home care
services. There were 25,000 hipfractures in Canada in 1993, most due to
falls. Hip fractures result in death in up to 20 percent of cases and
disability in 50 percent of those who survive.
In British Columbia
alone between 1992 and 1996, about 150,000 hospital days each year were
attributed to the care of persons aged 65 and older for injuries due to
a fall, compared with less than 12,000 days for automobile related injuries.
Falls occur due to…
• Vestibular system impairments
• Visual system impairments
• Somatosensory system impairments
• Mild traumatic brain injury
• Aging
• Neural Diseases
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Stroke
• Exaggeration of Imbalance
• Orthopaedic issue
TETRAX provides
a variety of clinical applications
• Risk of fall evaluation in the elderly
• Evaluation of the relationship between postural and learning disabilities
• Management of whiplash injuries and their long term effects
• Management of vertigo and dizziness
• Effects of fatigue and circadian changes on balance control
• Effects of drugs and intoxications
• Evaluation of fitness in sport, physical education, physiotherapy
and orthopedic interventions
Fall / Fracture‘s cost
It is estimated that falls among seniors population cost Canada’s
health care system $2.8 billion annually, of which $1 billion is in direct
health care costs. Falls by seniors are likely to have a growing impact
on society given that Canada’s senior population is projected to
grow to nearly five million by 2011.
The opportunity for Fall Risk / Hip Fracture Prevention is expanding everyday!
Testing one patient a day with the TETRAX system can result in a net profit
of over $5,000 a year, while providing your patients with a unique method
of evaluation for balance and fall risk assessment. The information you
provide your patients could very well save their life and benefit them
with a prolonged and active lifestyle!
